Humayun Ahmed to undergo 4 more chemotherapy

Humayun AhmedFamous contemporary Bengali fiction writer and playwright Humayun Ahmed is likely to undergo four more chemotherapy in the second stage of his fight against colon cancer, said his his wife Meher Afroz Shaon, who is now with the writer.

“The new cycle will start from Friday. Doctors have decided to give four cycles in this phase,”¬†Shaon said.

Humayun Ahmed was given his eighth chemotherapy cycle on Jan 21 after which doctors suggested a CT scan, which was held on Feb 6. Based on its outcome, the doctors took the decision for the second phase of the treatment. Humayun, also a filmmaker, went to New York on Sept 13 after he was diagnosed with colon cancer during a routine checkup in Singapore. He is undergoing treatment at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), a cancer treatment and research institution founded in 1884 in New York.

Humayun Ahmed is scheduled to take the ninth chemotherapy on February 17 and expected to due home on February 19. The rest therapies will be given after 15 days.

Humayun continued to write amid treatment considering the huge enthusiasm of his readers. Seven of his books are going to be published for the Ekushey Book Fair-2012.

“A CT scan will follow this cycle, based on which the doctors would decide on their course of action,” Shaon added.

On Jan 13, the 63-year-old writer was made senior special adviser to the Bangladesh Mission to the United Nations in New York.

Born in Mymensingh in 1948, Humayun completed his graduation from Dhaka University and later joined as a lecturer at the university’s Chemistry Department. Humay unretired from the DU to become a full time writer and filmmaker.

Humayun won the prestigious Bangla Academy Award in 1981, Ekushey Padak in 1994 and National Film Awards (Best Story in 1993, Best Film 1994 and Best Dialogue in 1994).
